The proliferation of Apple computers in households means, according to Internet security firm Sophos, that there will be a similar increase in the amount of malware and number of viruses that are being targeted at Mac owners. As such, they have extended their free anti-virus software to a new package designed specifically to protect Mac owners from malware and other virus attacks.

Sophos is well known for its creation of anti-virus and anti-malware software applications and while Mac owners have lived relatively safe in the knowledge that they have been largely free of virus attacks and malware infections, things could be set to change.

In the past couple of years, the release of various Apple products including laptops and desktops, has led to an increase in the number of security risks that are faced by Apple owners.

The free Sophos software is available to home users who, according to the company themselves, do not have the same understanding of how important it is to protect their Mac computer from viruses and other threats as business users.
